WHAT DO YOU DRIVE?
Richard or ‘Dicky’ to his friends, registered New Forest, Bay Roan, 24 years old.
Milo, part New Forest, Bay Roan, 21 years old.
Buddy, new Forest x Welsh, Chestnut, 15 years old.
All about 13.2hh and drive single or pair.
IN THE BEGINNING…
My Mum started driving my 13.2hh pony club pony Kizzy as I wouldn’t sell him when i outgrew him. She broke him to harness and I started off by grooming for her at home. One day I went to watch her and Dad at an event, I had never seen driving trials before. Barbara Nadin had tipped over in the cones and broken her groom’s nose! He wasn’t well enough to groom for her on the marathon so I was asked if I would do it. I did and was hooked.
WHY CARRIAGE DRIVING?
Things just seem to have gone that way!
The main one has to be representing Team GB at the World Combined Pony Championships in 2005 at Catton with Dicky (brought for 54 Guineas at Beaulieu Road sales as a foal) and Milo (brought for £400 out of the free ads, been sat on, but not schooled). Another highlight is becoming Indoor Pony Pair Champion in 2010 and being the first name on the trophy presented by the Indoor Team in memory of my Dad Snowy.
YOUR FAVOURITE PHASE?
Originally i would have said the marathon, but i have also got a real buzz from doing a good dressage test or great cones round!
BACK @ THE YARD
No one, we are full with the three!
TEA OR COFFEE?
I have to choose?! Tea.
IN THE LORRY PARK
You’ll find me at the lorry with my Mum and Tyler the hairy German [Shepheard] it’s the white Mercedes with a blue stripe, that’s if I’m not off chatting at someone elses…
IF IT WAS POSSIBLE…
Winding the clock back and making our roan ponies about 10 years younger.
