Meet our Members: Jack Ralph

WHAT DO YOU DRIVE?108
Spice (Mallards Wood Spice) a 13.2, 15 year old New
Forest Pony.

IN THE BEGINNING…
I started driving regularly four years ago with Spice. She has always been a very challenging drive and taught me huge amounts from the simplest of things at the start.

WHY CARRIAGE DRIVING?
Because I don’t really like riding horses and I’ve always had the opportunity given to me by mum – so it just seemed like the right thing to do.107

HIGHLIGHT
2016 has been hugely successful for me, winning the intermediate pony class at Keysoe and becoming junior supreme champion was a huge achievement. The outdoor season has also been amazing with some good competitions and all topped off by becoming novice pony national champion. But the biggest highlight would have to be my marathon at the national championships where we went out in thick mud and drove the fastest marathon of the first three pony classes (novice, intermediate and open).

YOUR FAVOURITE PHASE?
Although I get the most nervous out of all three phases before the marathon, it’s still my favourite!

106105TOP TIP
It’s always necessary to practice dressage and obstacles but never forget cones! They become the most important phase when you go to a national and a double clear will always help your final result! Also remember to stay cool and calm while at an event and never let a fellow competitor get inside your head!

BACK @ THE YARD
Make sure that you plan everything. You must look at what events you are aiming for and make a plan of what you will do leading up to the event. Planning what training sessions and fitness work you will do is key to ensure you feel fully prepared while at a competition.

TEA OR COFFEE?
I’m not really a huge fan of either, but I will drink tea if I have too.

IN THE LORRY PARK
You’ll find us at our maroon coloured 7.5 tonne lorry.

IF IT WAS POSSIBLE…
I would love to be able to compete on the international circuit doing FEI three star events.

If you are a WHHC member and would like to feature on ‘Meet our Members’ email us your answers to the questions above and a few of your favourite pictures.
